What Homeowners Should Know About Heat Pumps

A heat pump is an indoor appliance that is used to transfer heat from one section of the room to another. Heat pumps are only ideal for moderate heating and majority cooling needs. You should consider using the heat pump for air conditioning and a cooling experience during spring through our Florida fall season.

Types of Heat Pumps in the Market

There are two major types of heat pumps:

Air-to-air heat pumps: These types of heat pumps are the most common and a favorite for many homeowners. The appliances can capture heat between the indoors and outdoors to help heat or cool your home.
Geothermal heat pumps: These appliances can capture heat from underground sources and move it within your home to help keep the temperature levels constant. This type, however, is not very popular among homeowners.

How Heat Pumps Work

Heat pumps are used to heat homes during the winter and cool them during the hot summers. A heat pump can warm the indoor air by removing heat from a different source such as a surrounding unit or a ground-source. A heat pump is similar to an air conditioner in appearance and functionality. Unlike an air conditioner, a heat pump uses a reversing valve, thus allowing it to function for both heating and cooling needs. In other words, the heat pump can provide whichever temperature or level of comfort you desire.

Why You Need Heat Pumps during the Cold Weather and Hot Weather

A heat pump has two heat transfer surfaces commonly known as coils. The coils could act as an evaporator and a condenser. The indoor heat transfer surface is located in the air handler compartment while the outdoor heating surface is located on the outside surface. Both surfaces have fans (although the outdoor surface has a larger fan that draws air through it.) To ensure that the heat pump functions efficiently, the evaporator and condenser systems alternate their functions. Based on the prevailing indoor air temperatures, the heat pump's coils can function as either a condenser or evaporator.

During the summer months when the indoor temperatures are high, the indoor coils function as an evaporator. On the other hand, the outdoor coils act as a condenser leading to a cooling effect. The hot indoor air is forced to travel through the cooling coil known as the evaporator, where heat is transferred from it to the coil. Once the heat reaches the condenser, the air is forced into the atmosphere.

In the cold season, however, the functionality of the coils is altered. The internal coils function as a condenser while the external ones act as an evaporator. The outdoor air is forced through the external coil, thus allowing the coil to capture the heat and transfer it to the internal coil. Once the warm air reaches the condenser, the outside heat is forced into the indoor space to heat the air in it.

Benefits of installing Heat Pumps

Homeowners enjoy numerous benefits from using a heat pump. Some of the universal benefits of using this appliance are:

• Heat pumps are very efficient. When compared to the traditional heating furnaces, a heat pump is an extremely efficient heating system that can also be used as a cooling system during moderately hot temperatures. One of the factors that make the appliance's energy efficient is that they are designed not to generate their own heat. Instead, they capture the heat from a source and use it for heating purposes.

• Heat pumps are an eco-friendly heating system. According to Energy Savers, more than half of the energy consumed in the country is utilized for heating purposes. Most of the appliances used in heating homes during the cold weather are not that efficient, thus leading to high energy losses. By installing a heat pump in your home, you will convert it into a green home since you would have reduced your household's energy consumption.

It is estimated that homeowners get up to $4 worth of energy for each $1 used to heat their homes using the heat pumps. Since a heat pump requires little heat to function efficiently, using it ensures that you have lesser carbon emissions as compared to when you are using traditional furnaces that release a lot of carbon.

• Heat pumps offer a certain degree of comfort that the traditional furnaces cannot achieve. Homes that have a forced-air system for heating purposes encounter numerous challenges that make them uncomfortable to live in. For instance, the forced-air systems have strong hot and cold blasts that lead to significant temperature changes when the system is in use and when it is turned off, thus making them quite uncomfortable.

Heat pumps, on the other hand, can be run throughout the day emitting a constant amount of conditioned air throughout the day for comfortable living with minimal temperature fluctuations.
